Why nobody believes your ROI deck

The idea in one line

Talking is free, so talk proves nothing. Only a promise that would hurt you badly if you were lying will be believed.

You are on a call with a fintech partner. You say healthtag subscription saves their users up to 70 percent. You say 3.5 million people already use it. They nod. Then they ask for a pilot with no commitment, and the deal sits for two months.

Nothing you said was false. That is the problem. A weak competitor could say the exact same words at the same cost, which is zero. So your words carry no information, and the partner has to assume you are average.

The idea: signalling

Michael Spence described this in 1973, in a paper about why people buy degrees. He won the Nobel prize for it in 2001. His question was simple. When one side knows the truth and the other cannot check it, what makes any claim believable?

His answer: not the claim. The cost of the claim. A signal only works when it is cheap for a strong player and expensive for a weak one.

cstrong < Δ < cweak

In plain English. Call the extra money you win from being believed Δ. The signal only separates you from a weak rival when it costs you less than Δ, and costs the weak rival more than Δ. If both can afford it, everyone does it, and it means nothing again.

Which promises actually separate you
How to read it. Each bar is what the same promise costs a weak provider minus what it costs HealthTag, in relative terms. Bars to the right separate you, because a weak rival cannot copy them. Bars near zero are noise, anyone can say them. Illustrative structure, not measured data.
The part that contradicts normal advice

Normal advice says build trust by explaining more. Spence says extra explaining does nothing, because explaining is free for liars too. Worse, the signal does not need to create any value by itself. A degree can teach you nothing and still work, purely because a weak candidate could not survive it. So the useful question is never "what else can I tell them". It is "what can I offer that a weaker company literally could not afford to offer".

Four things to do

  1. Price the next fintech deal per verified visit, not per seat. If usage is fake, you earn nothing. A weak network cannot take that deal. That single clause does more than the whole deck.
  2. Add a written claw back. Offer to refund the partner's revenue share if redemption stays under an agreed floor in month three. Cheap for you if the network is real, fatal for a rival with thin coverage.
  3. Stop leading with 3.5 million users. It is free to say and unverifiable, so it reads as noise. Lead with one thing they can audit themselves, like the count of points of care inside their own top three cities.
  4. Treat cash blindness as a signalling problem, not a reporting problem. Prepaid on labs, radiology and clinics is the only part you can prove. Every category you move to prepaid turns a claim into evidence, which is what raises your price in the next negotiation.

Rates held, and a payments company buys a bank

The central bank holds rates for a fourth straight meeting
The MPC left the overnight deposit rate at 19 percent, lending at 20 percent and the main operation rate at 19.5 percent. They have not moved since the 100 basis point cut in February, citing annual inflation picking up again even as monthly pressure eases.
TabaPay raises 155 million dollars and moves to buy a bank
The US payments processor closed a 155 million dollar round led by FTV Capital and is using it to acquire Transact Bank of Denver, a federally chartered lender. The deal targets a Q4 2026 close, after which the bank becomes TabaBank.
What it means for youProcessors keep buying the rails underneath them, because owning the account is what lets them see the transaction. That is the same instinct behind your prepaid push. Whoever sees the transaction sets the price.
The National Bank of Egypt backs MNT-Halan at a 1.4 billion dollar valuation
Al Ahly Capital, the investment arm of Egypt's largest bank, put an initial 30 million dollars into a round of more than 70 million. Older news, included because it sets the context for who has money to spend on distribution right now.
The rate corridor against inflation
How to read it. The first three bars are the central bank's policy rates as of the 20 August decision. The fourth is annual urban inflation for July, the latest month published. The last bar is the gap between the deposit rate and inflation, which is what a saver actually earns after prices. At about 4 points positive, holding cash still pays, which is exactly why a 300 EGP annual subscription has to compete with a bank deposit for the same wallet.

Checked and did not find: no verifiable Fawry, Paymob, Valu, InstaPay or central bank announcement dated 4 to 6 September 2026 surfaced. Egyptian fintech was quiet over the weekend, which is normal, Friday and Saturday are the Egyptian weekend.

The state is looking for operators

The Health Ministry is reviewing a concession to run New Heliopolis Hospital
The ministry is evaluating a proposal to hand management, operation and development of this Health Insurance Authority hospital to an outside operator, to bring in international operating models. It is a public insurance asset moving toward private management.
What it means for youA new class of network partner is forming. An operator running a state hospital on a concession has volume targets and no marketing arm. That is a supply side partner who needs demand, which is the one thing you have.
Egypt to set up a migrant health unit with the IOM
The agreement covers early detection and treatment of HIV, medicine supply and field screening campaigns at specialised hospitals, funded by the International Organization for Migration. The unit will coordinate referrals for migrants and host communities.
What it means for youLow direct relevance. Do not chase it. Donor funded programmes move on grant cycles, which breaks your rule about short sales cycles.
Digital health funding is rebounding, but the money is concentrating
US digital health startups took 7.4 billion dollars in the first half of 2026. Twenty deals above 100 million dollars accounted for 45 percent of all capital, and there were 115 acquisitions in the half, 71 of them in Q2, the busiest quarter since 2021.
What it means for youConsolidation is the real signal, not the funding total. When buyers are this active, a distribution asset with 3.5 million users is worth more as an acquisition than as a fundraise. Keep the user numbers auditable.
US digital health VC funding, 2026
How to read it. Billions of dollars raised per quarter. Q1 is a published figure of 4.0 billion. Q2 is 3.4 billion, obtained by subtracting Q1 from the published first half total of 7.4 billion, both from Rock Health via Fierce Healthcare. Q3 is not published yet, so it is left blank rather than guessed.

Checked and did not find: nothing published between 3 and 6 September 2026 on universal health insurance enrolment or phase two rollout, drug authority pricing decisions, medicine shortages, Egyptian private hospital or pharmacy chain deals, or Egyptian healthtech funding. Two leads for a later issue, both from early August: the Tour4Cure medical tourism platform, and two proposed medical cities in the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein.

PMI jumps to 49.6, the mildest contraction since January
The S&P Global Egypt PMI rose from 46.8 in July to 49.6 in August. Below 50 still means shrinking, but employment rose for the first time since October 2025, and business confidence hit its highest since June 2022. Input costs and prices charged both re-accelerated.
Annual urban inflation rose to 14.9 percent in July, from 14.3 in June
Headline inflation went back up after three months of falling. Core inflation was 14.7 percent, with a flat monthly reading. The August figure is due from CAPMAS around 10 September.
Net foreign reserves reached 56.294 billion dollars, a 47th straight monthly rise
The central bank reported reserves at the end of July. The August figure has not been located, so it is not shown.
Annual urban inflation, percent
How to read it. Each point is the year on year rise in urban consumer prices for that month. August is blank because CAPMAS has not published it yet, due around 10 September. The line stopped falling in July and turned up. Note: the January to April points come from secondary reporting rather than a primary CAPMAS page, so treat the early shape as indicative and the May to July trend as the reliable part.
S&P Global Egypt PMI
How to read it. Above 50 the private sector is growing, below 50 it is shrinking. The dashed line is 50. January to April are blank because those monthly releases could not be verified today, and they are left as gaps rather than filled in. August at 49.6 is the closest to neutral in seven months.

USD/EGP: the only verified quote today is the central bank average of 50.87 buy and 51.01 sell as of Wednesday 2 September 2026, with a market level of about 50.95 on Friday 4 September, per Rio Times — Egypt economy, IMF, pound and Suez. A monthly history could not be verified from a primary source, so the usual exchange rate chart is left out rather than drawn from estimated points.

September skill: make claims a partner can audit

This month's skill

Every month has one skill. September is trust and information. The skill is turning free claims into checkable ones. By the end of the month, every number you put in front of a partner should be something they could verify without asking you.

Today's drill · 10 minutes

Open the last proposal you sent. Go through it line by line and mark each number as A or B. A means the partner could check it themselves. B means they have to take your word for it. Count them. If B is more than half, that proposal was a conversation, not an offer.

Habit to build

One auditable number a day

Before you close the laptop, write down one number about HealthTag that a partner could verify without you. Keep them in one note. That note becomes your next deck.

Tap a dot for each day you do it. Thirty days.

Habit to drop

Opening with the 3.5 million

Stop leading any partner conversation with total user count. It is free to say, so it carries no information. Lead with coverage in their cities instead.

Tap a dot for each day you avoid it. Thirty days.

Friday and Saturday are the Egyptian weekend, so EGX30 is a Thursday close. Two sources gave different world gold readings for 5 September, 4,476.6 and 4,429.10 dollars. The difference is not resolved, so the table shows the Friday 4 September settle from USAGOLD instead.

Why they moved

US payrolls came in at 162,000, roughly three times what was expected
Unemployment held at 4.1 percent. Yields and the dollar jumped, and the market moved September rate hike odds to about 65 percent from 55. Gold, which pays no interest, fell about 2 percent.
Bitcoin fell below 80,000 dollars on the same print
BTC dropped nearly 3.5 percent to 78,649 dollars, reversing a run to 82,240, its highest since May. That rally had been built on a Fed governor signalling support for holding rates, plus 730 million dollars of ETF inflows on 3 September.
EGX30 closed at a record above 56,000
The index gained 1.06 percent to 56,270.32 on Thursday, an all time high. Market value rose 38 billion pounds to 4.418 trillion, on turnover of about 14.25 billion pounds.
Egyptian gold barely moved while the world price swung
Local 21K held near 6,320 pounds a gram through Saturday, and local silver stayed at 104 pounds a gram for 999. A stable pound absorbed the international drop.

The Suez debt swap idea is dead

Cabinet rejects any proposal to transfer Suez Canal ownership to the central bank
The government said the canal is a strategic public utility tied to national security and sovereignty, and that it will not be sold, mortgaged, exchanged or transferred to settle any debt. The proposal to swap it against domestic debt was described as one person's personal view, not government policy.
What it means for youThe reporting does not say the debt problem got smaller. It says one shortcut is closed. Domestic debt pressure keeps the state hunting for cash, which is why hospital concessions like the New Heliopolis one appear. Read those two stories together.
US envoys in Moscow to restart talks on Ukraine
Witkoff and Kushner arrived to revive efforts to end the invasion. Zelenskyy asked for a halt to air attacks during the visit, and Moscow has not responded publicly.
